Trap, Neuter and Return is the only humane and effective means to control the feline population. Since 2008 our organization has been a leader in sterilizing, vaccinating and returning cats to their environment in the central Texas area. We continue to grow and impact approximately 20% more cats each year. We have historically utilized the Austin Humane Society and its free spay/neuter program but effective January 1, 2016 the program is no longer a free resource and each spay or neuter now costs $20 each. For the hundreds we trap and sterilize each year, that expense adds up to thousands. In addition, the ill or injured cats that we often come across during our trapping efforts require veterinary care. The medical and surgical costs add up to thousands of dollars every year but are part of the responsible work of our TNR program.
In addition, we feed hundreds of cats each day. Rain or shine, they are waiting for us! Our costs to keep the kitty cupboard full also reaches into the thousands each year. The cats do not understand budgets, they only understand that they are hungry. Our volunteers go out daily and feed every colony in what amounts to 135-145 cats per day fulfilling their most basic need.
